Debunking Elopement Myths

May 14, 2022

Are you on the fence about eloping because of different elopement myths and stigmas associated with eloping? Do you think elopements are only for the young and carefree? Are elopements just a way to avoid dealing with family drama?

Both of these elopement myths couldn’t be further from the truth! Eloping can be an incredibly personal and intimate experience, regardless of your age or relationship status. In fact, eloping is a great way to meaningfully and intentionally commit to each other.

There are so many different reasons why couples choose to elope. Maybe you’re drawn to the spontaneity of eloping or maybe you simply want to keep your wedding day focused on you and your partner. Regardless of your reason, know that you’re not alone – more and more couples are eloping every year!

If you’re still on the fence about eloping, let’s take a look at some of these common misconceptions:

Myth: Elopements are about running off in secret

First of all, eloping does not mean that you are running away to elope. Eloping simply means that you are getting married without the fluff and circumstance of a large wedding. You certainly don’t have to tell anyone that you’re eloping beforehand! But the modern definition of an elopement is all about intentionally getting married in an intimate fashion. You can still have your family and close friends present if you elope- it’s entirely up to you!

Myth: Elopements aren’t valid

Secondly, eloping does not mean that your marriage is any less valid than a traditional marriage. Your elopement will be just as legal as a traditional wedding. It will be registered with the government in the same way. You will still need to obtain a marriage license in order to elope. And it will also be just as emotionally and spiritually valid as a traditional wedding.

Myth: Eloping is only for couples who can’t afford a wedding

This is probably one of the most common elopement myths out there, but it simply isn’t true! Eloping can be a great option for couples who want to save money on their wedding. But it’s also a great option for couples who want to have a more intimate and personal wedding day. It’s entirely up to you how you spend your elopement budget- whether you choose to splurge on an amazing elopement photographer or keep things simple with a DIY elopement ceremony.

Myth: Elopements are a consolation prize

Thirdly, eloping does not mean that you are settling for second best. If anything, eloping shows that you are confident in your relationship and don’t feel the need to put on a show for others. Eloping can be an incredibly romantic gesture, and can be a great way to start your married life together.

Myth: Elopements are only for young couples.

While it’s true that eloping is often associated with young, carefree couples, this doesn’t mean that eloping is off-limits for older couples. In fact, eloping can be a great option for couples who want to avoid the hassle and expense of a traditional wedding. Whether you’re in your 20s or your 60s, eloping is a perfectly valid option!

Myth: Elopements are always spontaneous.

While some couples do choose to elope on a whim, this isn’t always the case. Many couples plan their elopements well in advance, often spending months or even years planning every last detail. You may be planning a spur-of-the-moment elopement or a carefully planned affair. Just know that there’s no right or wrong way to elope! If you’ve been dreaming of eloping since you were a child, there’s no reason why you can’t plan your elopement well in advance!

Myth: Elopements are just a way to avoid family drama.

This is another common misconceptions about elopement. While it’s true that eloping can help you avoid family drama, this isn’t the only reason why couples choose to elope. Many couples elope because they want to keep their wedding day focused on them and their relationship. If you’re looking for a more intimate and personal wedding experience, eloping may be the perfect option for you!

Myth: Elopements are always small affairs.

This is another common misconception about elopements. Just because you’re eloping doesn’t mean that you have to keep your wedding small! If you want to invite your closest family and friends to witness your elopement, there’s nothing stopping you from doing so. You can elope with just a few close loved ones or an entire group of people.

And let’s not forget, how big or intimate your elopement feels is not entirely dictated by guest count! A whirlwind elopement in New Orleans, dancing and drinking in the French Quarter during Mardi Gras with just the two of you can feel a LOT bigger than a secluded cabin retreat with 15 of your closest friends and family. Your elopement can be packed full of adventure and grandeur!

Myth: Eloping means sacrificing all wedding traditions.

If you’re worried about sacrificing all the “traditional” aspects of a wedding by eloping, don’t be! There are plenty of ways to incorporate tradition into your elopement. Like exchanging traditional vows or having a small reception afterwards. Eloping doesn’t have to mean sacrificing everything you love about weddings. It can be the perfect way to create a truly unique and personal wedding day!

As you can see, there are plenty of myths about elopement that simply aren’t true! If you’re considering eloping, don’t let these misconceptions deter you – instead, use them as motivation to create the elopement of your dreams!

If you’re still on the fence about eloping, consider talking to a wedding planner or elopement photographer (like me!). They can help you plan the perfect elopement, whether it’s spontaneous or carefully planned!
